With your health in mind you should have your air conditioning system serviced at regular intervals. The focus should be on two important factors in particular:
The evaporator- regular disinfection
It’s here that the bacteria, spore and micro-organisms like to breed. These enter the interior through the ventilation system and can cause unpleasant allergic reactions in some people.
Interior filter- regular replacement
This filter is particularly important for clean air inside the vehicle. It filters pollen, dust, dirt and many other impurities. The interior filter should be replaced once a year or every 12,000 miles.

The enemies of the system
Air- Water- Dirt
A new or well serviced air conditioning system is filled 100% with refrigerant and does not contain either air, water or dirt.
Every year, up to 10% of the refrigerant can escape from the air conditioning system due to “natural evaporation”. Over a longer period, air and humidity penetrate the system. This can be aided even further by leaks (caused by stones thrown up from the road or porous O-rings). This leads to the filter- dryer becoming saturated very quickly, preventing it from absorbing humidity.
If this happens, the air conditioning system no longer performs at full capacity. But that’s not all the bad news. Over time, humidity and refrigerant form an acid. In turn, this attacks the various components of the air conditioning system and causes corrosion as well. The damage to components caused in this way can often lead to enormous repair bills.
Another “enemy” of the air conditioning system is dirt, which is produced by the mechanical operation of the compressor. The degree of soiling (metal abrasion) depends on the quantity and/or quality of the oil in the compressor. The more acid builds up, the more the quality of the oil is reduced by the formation of an emulsion. This can lead to damage to the system, even to total system failure.

That’s how it works!
The air conditioning system is equipped with a filter-dryer to keep these enemies in check. So have the filter-dryer replaced every time servicing work is carried out.
Your air conditioning system is a combination of vehicle heating and refridgerant circuit.

Regular inspection and servicing of your air conditioning system will prevent sudden failure and save you a lot of trouble. At the same time saving you money, too. For example, when the mechanically damaged compressor has to be replaced, the necessary cleaning of the system and the replacement of any components can quickly run up a repair bill of £700.
